Are there any plans on using the open-source drivers instead of catalyst in the future?

Not - for now. But we are already in contact with the main developer. For now the results with the OSS UVD, which uses btw. VDPAU are a bit mixed.
24p Material is alrady working fine. There is currently no deinterlacing at all. We will see how it is going on in the future.

I hope to see a fglrx'less openelec version in the near future :-)

if you want test and report back your findings:

i will update this builds regulary. Please Note, they are based on our last work for 3.3/3.4 so it may be some other things, not VDPAU/radeon related can be a bit broken too.

greetings

Stephan

As a good note the memory leak of 5G per hour is now no more making the Generic_OSS a viable platform for videos once again.

With a high bitrate 720p video and decoding DTS, it still has a few

Soon, yes. The link you are refering to only has the 7.1 PCM for now (everything works not dts-hd, not truehd, but with 8 channels), as the patch from yesterday is quite fresh - we got the specs on Monday afternoon. I also did not port it to 3.11 yet, as 3.12 will be released in time.

just to emphasize a point here:

AMD linux is starting into a new world. Within just 10 days, we got more done than in 2+ years XVBA. I hope all that work can mature now a bit and then officially with kernel 3.13 and with mesa 9.3 all will be fine out of the box on every amd box you are buying from 4000 series including the 8000 series.

Only thing we still need to find: OSS UVD is approx 25% slower now than xvba was. We don't know where this is coming from, but the relevant devs work exactly into this direction. It is only an acadamic case, as most content like blurays (1080p24 or Live TV 1080i50) works really great. But if you currently try to play 1080p50 (50 progressive frames, don't compare with the refreshrate) than we got 50fps on E350(xvba) and 36fps (oss uvd).

For OpenELEC we even have the chance to make all that happen earlier as we can basically "ship" what we want and prepackage that for the user. Let's see if I find time over the WE to port the bitstream audio stuff and the other fixes to a 3.11 kernel.

Here a little comparison:

Max resolution: 2048x1152 (xvba) 2048x1152 (oss uvd)
Max fps h264/1080p: 50 fps (xvba) 36 fps (oss uvd) on AMD E350
mpeg2 decoding support: no (xvba) yes (oss uvd)
mpeg4 decoding support: no (xvba) yes (oss uvd)
vc1 decoding support: yes (xvba) yes (oss uvd)
Bitstream Audio*: yes (xvba) yes (oss uvd)

* Does have nothing to do with the video decoding framework as it was an alsa change. So you see: a bit of maturing and all will be perfect.

Howdy,
I'm looking to build a HTPC based on an AMD CPU using the integrated graphics but don't wish to pull the trigger on parts until I'm certain that they'll be supported.
I've tried trawling through the various threads re: ongoing AMD support but haven't been able to locate much info that is recent and/or conslusive.
Could someone please advise the effect of the UVD development on Gotham/OE 4?
Any update would be appreciated.

Cheers

The effect of the UVD development on Gotham/OE 4 ?...

As it stands right now, and as I have tested things on a simple basis (no AVR, htpc directly connected to a TV) with a A4 5300 apu setup, things basically work. Also running OE with a AMD HD 6450 gpu is pretty stable already. But remember that Gotham development is officially still in Alpha stages, and tweaks and quircks are still ongoing. If you have more specific questions, i suggest you ask them.
Last Edit: 3 years 7 months ago by klojum. Reason: typos
