Here are quick instructions to set your own OpenELEC splash screen without needing to rebuild anything. You just need to follow the same instructions as for the Nvidia/ATI splash screen fix :

www.openelec.tv/find-help/documentation/howtos/system/item/55-fix-the-splash-screen

But then once you have the /flash partition mounted read/write, just copy the PNG splash screen you want as /flash/oemsplash.png. That's it!

To copy the file there, the easiest is to fist copy it to the Storage partition somehow (the Windows sharing comes to mind), then execute something like this :
cp /storage/pictures/oemsplash.png /flash/

Hope this helps!

Oooops!

Well, it's also possible to create project/{Generic,Intel,ION,...}/splash/splash.png and get that picked up automatically by the build, which is what I was doing initially, but then while looking at the init file about NFS related stuff, I came across the support for the oemsplash.png file and thought to myself "how cooool!!!"... so... thanks for that nice little feature, and sorry for spoiling it!

I really REALLY like how modular and customizable OpenELEC is made, thanks a lot for all your hard work.

you need to mount the system as read write

mount -o remount,rw /flash

Are you using a dev build, as the way the splash screen is done has now changed, so the above changes will no longer work

I've had a quick look, and it seems that with the switch to splashutils it's no longer possible to change the splash image so easily.

It should still be possible, though, and this is how (warning: untested!) :
  • Extract/unsquash the main image.
  • Replace the /etc/splash/default/ content with your own.
  • Rebuild the main image.

Not as easy. If you're rebuilding your own OpenELEC, it seems from packages/sysutils/splashutils/install that you can also create a projects/{Fusion,Intel,ION,...}/splash/default/ tree with content similar to the original one found under packages/sysutils/splashutils/splash/default/ (config files and images for various resolutions).

Why doesn't OpenELEC supports an easy way to set a custom splash screen?

With the latest Eden beta version, how can I change the splash screen?

I am NOT a complete newbie on Linux, but when it comes to compiling and such, I do not know what I am doing. It would be awesome if someone could post a how-to guide. For example, the 2 part Raspberry Pi posts show how to compile and such. This I believe I could follow and do, but the missing pieces for me are:

-From what I download from git - where do I find the file to edit/replace for splash screen
-After compiling, how can I use this to either implement it on my current system, or create new installation thumb drive disk?

I have some ideas for the splash screen, that would make it feel more like an entertainment system.

Thank you!

H.

if your ideas includes our logo, why not share the ideas and if we like this we include this as default?

Of course... what would be helpful is to get the logo in eps or some other vector format. Is that available anywhere?

edit: Found the logo:

artwork.openelec.tv/

Going to do some design work.
