The OpenELEC team is proud to announce OpenELEC 5.0.2.

[UPDATE]: Due to a bug while updating OpenELEC to newer releases in OpenELEC-5.0.2 for RaspberryPi and RaspberryPi-2, we released OpenELEC-5.0.3 for both platforms. The other platforms are not affected, so we did not release a update for the other systems. You can download the fixed builds via our download page.

OpenELEC-5.0 is the next stable release, which is a feature release and the successor of OpenELEC-4.2.

The headline change is the update from XBMC 13 (Gotham) to Kodi 14.1 (Helix) and the big switch from XBMC to Kodi branding. Both project teams have conducted a major find/replace but if you spot residual mentions of XBMC anywhere please let us know. The name change affects more than the GUI; all references in code have been changed and in the OpenELEC filesystem /storage/.xbmc will be recreated as a symlink to /storage/.kodi to ensure hardcoded paths in addons or scripts continue to work. For information on Kodi 14 you can find on http://kodi.tv/kodi-14-0-helix-unwinds/.

Due to the potential for typo-bugs and breakage from Kodi renaming YOU ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO MAKE A FULL BACKUP before performing a manual update and perform a “Reset System Settings to defaults (Soft Reset)” after the update if you update directly from OpenELEC-4.x or earlier.

Please note many addons and skins remain to be ported by their developers. This is out with our control an until this happens they will either not work or be marked as broken by Kodi. If an addon or skin is essential to you please confirm with its developer prior to upgrade if it is compatible with Kodi (Helix).

Other notable “under the hood” changes include a version bump from v3.16 to v3.17 Linux kernel, and a switch from OpenSSL to LibreSSL following the heartbleed disclosure. The LibreSSL package includes better licensing and allows OpenELEC to be simplified by removing support for other cryptographic libraries such as GnuTLS.

Supported Platform Changes

RaspberryPi-2 support

If you want to support us, you can buy your own RaspberryPi-2 at ThePiHut by using this link.
ThePiHut Logo

Starting with OpenELEC-5.0.1 we added support for RaspberryPi-2:

Raspberry Pi 2 - Model B Technical Specifications:

  • Broadcom BCM2836 ARMv7 Quad Core Processor powered Single Board Computer running at 900MHz
  • 1GB RAM
  • 40pin extended GPIO
  • 4 x USB ports
  • 4 pole Stereo output and Composite video port
  • Full size HDMI
  • CSI camera port for connecting the Raspberry Pi camera
  • DSI display port for connecting the Raspberry Pi touch screen display
  • Micro SD port for loading your operating system and storing data
  • Micro USB power source

Raspberry Pi 2 - Model B Features:

  • 6x Faster - Broadcom BCM2836 ARMv7 Quad Core Processor powered Single Board Computer running at 900MHz
  • Double Memory - 1GB RAM so you can now run bigger and more powerful applications
  • Identical board layout and footprint as the Model B+, so all cases and 3rd party add-on boards designed for the Model B+ will be fully compatible.
  • Fully HAT compatible
  • 40pin extended GPIO to enhance your “real world” projects. GPIO is 100% compatible with the Model B+ and A+ boards. First 26 pins are identical to the Model A and Model B boards to provide full backward compatibility across all boards.
  • Connect a Raspberry Pi camera and touch screen display (each sold separately)
  • Stream and watch Hi-definition video output at 1080P
  • Micro SD slot for storing information and loading your operating systems.
  • 10/100 Ethernet Port to quickly connect the Raspberry Pi to the Internet
  • Combined 4-pole jack for connecting your stereo audio out and composite video out

Advanced power management:
You can now provide up to 1.2 Amp to the USB ports–enabling you to connect more power hungry USB devices directly to the Raspberry PI. (This feature requires a 2 ampere micro USB power supply.)

Freescale iMX6 support

We are adding Freescale imx6 support for a limited number of boxes, starting with the CuBox-i and CuboxTV mini devices. Also, after many years, support for the mk1 (silver) AppleTV build has been discontinued, and there will be no official v5.0 (Kodi) release for Apple devices. This decision was partly driven by the Kodi development team removing CrystalHD acceleration support in Kodi v14.0 and the unrelated removal of the CrystalHD driver from the v3.17 Linux kernel. In both cases CrystalHD code has not been maintained for several years, and as surrounding codebases moved forwards over time the level of compatibility and optimisation has gone distinctly backwards. At the same time, XBMC’s gradual increase in size breached the limits of the 256MB RAM available in the box to cause a cascade of playback problems for an increasing number of users. Our AppleTV user base has grown sizeable over time, and to the users upset by this announcement we apologise. However, the project staff felt that it was time and that v4.2 should be the final AppleTV release.

Users thinking about upgrading an ageing AppleTV might like to consider the ultra-compact CuBox-i devices from our partner Solid-Run. Second generation Cubox-i devices are based on the Freescale i.MX6 system-on-chip (SoC) platform with multiple Cortex-A9 CPU’s, hardware 2D/3D GPU decoding, and a broad range of peripheral ports including 1080p HDMI and S/PDIF. Solid-Run are running a special promotion for OpenELEC users that gives a 5% discount on the recommended CuBox-i2ex and CuBox-i4pro models, including a larger 8GB micro SD (up from 4GB) that comes preinstalled with OpenELEC instead of Android.

We don't earn a single cent with those special offers but we want to achieve two things here:

  1. Support a great piece of hardware and their developers.
  2. Give our users some cost effecient options to have a nice OpenELEC and therefore kodi experience.

Solid-Run webstore
CuBox-i2ex on Solid-Run's webstore
CuBox-i4pro on Solid-Run's webstore

You have to use the discount code “openelec-4-cubox” (without quotes) while ordering.

EU users can use the OpenELEC Special offer from http://www.ecservices.de with the same discount code openelec-4-cubox” to get a CuBox-i2ex or CuBox-i4pro installed with OpenELEC on a 8GB SD Card with 5% discount and without the need to pay customs via

ECServices OpenELEC Special offer
CuBox-i2ex ECServices OpenELEC Special offer
CuBox-i4pro ECServices OpenELEC Special offer

There are also many cost-effective and compact-size HTPC options from Zotac, Gigabyte, Intel (NUC) and the staggeringly popular Raspberry Pi device; and Pi derivatives like “slice” that will ship with a customised version of OpenELEC. For users with higher-performance requirements, our Generic build continues to support the majority of current-generation ITX and mini-ITX motherboards that use Intel Celeron/Core CPUs and GPU hardware from Intel, AMD and nVidia.

How To Upgrade To OpenELEC 5.0 Release

If you are going to update from one of our older releases, we STRONGLY advise that you make a backup of your XBMC data and do a manual update. You can use our OpenELEC Settings addon if you are using OpenELEC-3.2 or later to backup your data. For more details, please visit http://wiki.openelec.tv/index.php?title=Updating_OpenELEC.

Testing and Reporting

There has been many months of development and testing in the run-up to this releases, but like any major update there are a lot of changes. Unfortunately, we are unable to test every scenario on all hardware, so it’s possible you might pick up on an issue we may have missed (this is why we do beta tests). We would like anyone brave enough to test this release and report issues that they find either with OpenELEC or Kodi.

Different Intel platforms currently can be bugged with GPU hangs. Those are kernel, mesa, vaapi issues in the respective libraries which cannot be solved by us. If you are hit by such a bug (see https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87564for reference) you need to provide the proper logfiles and submit this bug on this bugtracker.

We are currently working directly with upstream on deinterlacing on CuBox hardware (CuBox-i 4pro, CuBox-i 2ex). We ship this code in OpenELEC but have it disabled by default as we still miss some 10 to 15% for Deinterlacing of 1080i50 content. You can manually set Deinterlace to "Auto" (don't choose On) for the relevant stream (tv channels) to see the current state. Work is going on concerning that matter and we will continue to ship this code within future.

Thank You!

We would like to thank our users, team members and partners for testing, reporting and fixing issues, creating how-to documents, developing new features, and their donations of hardware and funds to the project. We appreciate your continued support, without it we would not be able to continue.

Pi1 and Pi2 users should NOT upgrade to 5.0.2 without a backup of /flash/config.txt.

Release 5.0.2 includes a very serious error that will overwrite your /flash/config.txt with a default file, effectively removing all codec licence keys, overclocks and other personal configuration details.

I'm sure a new release will resolve this unfortunate issue, until then do not update (or disable auto-update).

Just to add that the 5.0.2 tar and auto-update link has been taken down for existing Pi1/Pi2 users. The disk image is still there, but that's fine, as you only get the problem when upgrading an existing installation.

Found this out the hard way :p

I couldn't be bothered to manually re-edit my config file, so I installed this..

openelec.tv/forum/124-raspberry-pi/68533-addon-to-configure-raspberry-pi-config-txt

Great addon! Lets you edit the config file (for the Pi) within the GUI. This should be included in the main release, under 'expert' settings or something.

Thanks for the new release gents.

the Baytrail issue is Kernel related started with 3.17.x and the decision from OE to use a Kernel version greater than 3.16.7 makes baytrail user not really happy. The possible workaround should clear for the baytrail user and have been discussed several times here in the Forum now.

But EVERYONE with this issue is welcome to narrowed it down and hopefully get it fixed by Intel
github.com/OpenELEC/OpenELEC.tv/issues/3726#issuecomment-68499144

and kodi itself still works nice with mini ubuntu and a Kernel 3.16.7 dated from 30-Oct-2014 which isn't really outdated yet, therefore I don't see it gone soon :-) ...

kind regards

Thank you guys so much for making OpenELEC available on the RPi 2 so quickly!

I got mine today and installed 5.0.3. It's freaking fast, no matter how much I stress it. Aeon Knox runs fluently even while it's scraping movies. :side:

Hi,

I become sometimes Freezes, the Player SurfaceView freeze but sound continue ... not the entire OS only Kodi seems broken ssh connection works normal
don't know if Kodi or openelec the culprit ... or maybe my network (timeout etc.); I stream all my content over Gbit ethernet from a NAS.

this freeze seems random, I got it from time to time on several Movies no specific encoding or anything else.

at 00:17:07 T:139846859278208 starts the "last" episode

OE runs on a Intel NUC D54250WYK;
it occurs in the past on "every" 5.X.X build (less than once per week)
