I saw an interesting Youtube vid from a fellow who runs Rasbmc off a USB stick. It looks like a noticeable improvement over running xbmc on an SD card.

Is something like this possible with OpenElec and it's read only directory / system structure?

Thx, cheers

some people say it's quicker when using the storage partition on a usb stick. This requires you to make a ext4 partitioned USB stick and then change the cmdline.txt to have disk=/dev/sda1
<-- Hit me with some karma if I've helped you out :)

I tested this using Rasbmc and he's correct. It's a very noticeable improvement on the Pi. Menus are quick and even background fan art is possible without bringing the Pi to it's knees. Probably the biggest benefit is that the Pi will run in Super / over clocked mode without destroying the data on the SD boot card.

I've been a fan of OpenElec for about a month but I can't get the WLAN to connect. On Rasbmc I had the wireless working in 60 seconds, SSID, password and connect. I hope you folks can improve on that experience in OE. Until then I have to stick with Rasbmc.

I do, works great. But I still need the SD-card for booting. / is on sd-card and /storage is on USB.

I'm going to give it a try when I get more USB storage ; it's worth a shot! I want to stick with OpenElec but the performance improvements on Rasbmc with USB are too significant to ignore.

I see where that is done now. Thanks very much.

Edit - I found a 1 gig USB stick in the wifey's laptop case and gave it a whirl. It's fantastic ! If you try this make sure you use /dev/sda and not /dev/sda1 <partition specified ; it doesn't like it> <---edit/edit - This was because I transferred the image to the device and not a partition !

Anyone using OE on the Pi needs to do this ! ; the performance improvements are astonishing. I had no problems with over clocking and USB read / writes either =)) !

-Many thanks

Does this means rw speed is better with USB stick than SD card?

Can you explain the steps to do it?
Thanks.

I have tried /dev/sda1 using a 1GB USB stick and apart form losing setting and add-ons it is working faster so I have to go back and do a backup first then change to /dev/sda1 and restore from backup.

I will update after a couple of days.

1. Format a USB stick as ext4 (use gparted on linux... you need a linux box to do this easily)
2. SSH in to openelec
3. # mount -o rw,remount /flash
4. Edit /flash/commandline.txt to have disk=/dev/sda1 (or a different partition/disk if it's different)
5. Profit!

These are the steps required, however use /dev/sda (without the partition qualifier '1').

It's a lot faster. Probably the biggest plus is if you are tinkering with over clocking and the Pi reboots / goes south it won't corrupt the data on the USB stick as it does on the SD card.
