in this tutorial i will show how to install an hd44780 lcd display without the need for compiling an image.
i don't know if the is tutorial for this already on this forum but i will post this anyway (i searched but didn't find anything).

Sofware needed:
WinSCP (google it)
The folder in the attachment - docs.google.com/file/d/0B13SNDaabXrsUUxaOEZXS1NjOWc/

Hardware:
an hd44780 lcd display
a 10Kohm potentiometer
cables for the connections

first make this circuit :

download the folder with all the files necessary and unzip it (there should be a folder named raspdrivers, a file named LCDd and another file named LCDd.conf)
now turn on the rpi and with winSCP acess it and go to /storage/.config/ and place the unziped files in there.
like this:

now on openelec go to System>Settings>System and Enable LCD/VFD
now go to the Openelec Settings Configuration Addon System>LCD/VFD Driver chose hd44780

Reboot the system and everything should be working
if you want to change the information displayed on the lcd you can go to /storage/.xbmc/userdata and mess around with the code in the file named LCD.xml

that lcd uses an i2c chip , this tutorial is for a "direct connection" between the lcd and the rpi.
i don't have that kind of lcd so i can't help you very much

Hi there magno23. Tried your files with no much hope (I admit) and works like a charm indeed.
I didn't take the time yet to mess around with config to fine tune but I will soon.
How did you come up with this solution?
Thanks a lot!

Thanks Magno23. This tutorial helped me to run my 16x2 LCD with openelec.
I wish that while playing music in openelec, my 16x2 display will work as stereo level meter or spectrum analyser. I have seen a few YouTube video too. I think its possible by editing lcdd.conf or any other file but I have no programming idea. Anybody can help?
Regards.

For me and for now, no, it doesn't seem to work.
I don't know if it is a matter of drivers or GPIO, I'm searching.

For latest versions of XBMC/kodi, you've to install this addon
kodi.wiki/view/Add-on:XBMC_LCDproc

It works like a charm for Rpi 1 B, I don't know for B+, and I search for 2 B ..

Ok, I found this:
sourceforge.net/p/lcdproc/discussion/312/thread/c106d4b8/

And the new built for Rpi2 here:
sourceforge.net/p/lcdproc/patches/_discuss/thread/4c659fe3/b8f3/attachment/hd44780.so

So you've to replace the one in the provided archive AND also, you've to replace
ConnectionType=rpi
by
ConnectionType=raspberrypi
in LCDd.conf

And it will work :cheer:

Do you mean Rpi 2 model B OR Rp1 model B+ ?

If it is the brand new Rpi 2, so see my post above, with the correct "driver".

hum, strange, it should work.

are you sure you are using a hd44780 LCD ?

reboot your Pi and check the log with
journalctl --no-pager -b -0
look for any LCDd error

it has helped me to solve the issue with Rpi 2

also, what you can do, is killing the instance of LCDd and launch it manually to see the output.

something like
pkill LCDd
/usr/sbin/LCDd -f -c /storage/.config/LCDd.conf -d hd44780
(not tested)
