Does XBMC need to be on a certain screen or anything to play the file? Just trying to rule out easy stuff.

Where does the file need to be created? What file type? Just copy/paste the line of code, save, reboot?

no, it just need's to be on.

make sure the volume is on and everything obvious like that.

create the file in your Configfiles SMB share (eg. \\192.168.1.7\Configfiles\)

just a text file. notepad or wordpad should work. save the file as asound.conf then reboot

Done, saved as asound.conf in the Configfiles folder. Rebooted. Clicked on a file to play, speakers crackled a tiny bit, but no sound.

Anything I could have missed or other ideas?

sorry, should have said save, check the guide, reboot.

set your audio settings as follows
Set Output HDMI
Set Downlevel Mix ON
Set AC3 ON
Set 5.1
Set DTS ON
Set Custom: pcm.triple
Set Custuom: pcm.triple
then reboot again
