Hi!

I'm trying to boot OpenELEC 3.1.0 from a CF. I followed this documentation:

wiki.openelec.tv/index.php?title=Live_Bo..._Manual_Installation

as the installer was unable to see my CF which is pluged in a CF-IDE adapter.

But when it tries to boot, it fails with a message saying it is unable to boot from LABEL=System partition. Why? Is it a hardware restriction, because of my CF adapter?

Note that the partition can be correctly mount using this label from another system on the same machine...

Thanks for your help.

Ok, I switched to /dev/sdxx, and it boots. I can now see the splash screen, but then, it fails with the message:

** Error in prepare_sysroot: mount_common: Could not mount /flash/SYSTEM **

I tried to modify the partition label from 'System' to 'SYSTEM', but it didn't change anything.

Any idea?

Use /dev/sdxx again?

Well, I think I said something wrong. /flash/SYSTEM is a file the system is trying to mount. Am I right? I found a /flash/ dir in the squashfs file (SYSTEM).

But why does it try to mount the squahsfs again?

I'm lost...

It is exactly as described on the wiki; I just changed the link to the partition:
DEFAULT linux
PROMPT 0
LABEL linux
KERNEL /KERNEL
APPEND boot=/dev/sda1 disk=/dev/sda2 quiet ssh
Could it be a partition size issue? The page I used says it needs 200MB for SYSTEM. On another page, it says 512MB! Mine was 256MB, and I changed it to 512MB without success. But it may need more? My CF card is only 2GB, so the STORAGE partition may won't be enough, then...

I tried to resize the SYSTEM partition to 1GB: same problem :(

I tried to remove the 'quiet' param, but I can only see the kernel messages. Then, the splash screen appears, and there is no more debug output. Is there a way to turn debug on?

Try adding nosplash to syslinux.cfg.
Are you sure you have file named SYSTEM (all letters capital) on first partition - sda1? And yes this file is mounted.
And do you have any other disk attached when booting from CF card?

syslinux.cfg? Or extlinux.conf?

Yes, the SYSTEM file is there (I can mount it on my desktop).
And yes, I have another HD...

Ok, I found where to put the nosplash param! On the kernel line params...

But I don't see usefull informations: OE says it mounts the 2 partitions (successfully), then try to mount /flash/SYSTEM, and fails.

I think the problem is related to the CF. I tried to duplicate the entire CF (dd) on a USB key, and all works fine! Even the boot=LABEL=System works! But I have to use boot=/dev/sda1 on the CF...

Any idea what can happen? How can I have more debug informations while booting? As said in my first post, the OE installer is unable to see the CF, that's why I had to use manual installation. Could a kernel module or so be missing?

can you start a linux (ubuntu/fedora/suse) live system with the CF card connected and paste "dmesg" and "lsmod" output (to see if we miss some kernel modules)?

I don't see the problem if kernel is running from it. Then SYSTEM should be mounted as well. Could be that something is missing in kernel.

I tried to unplug the other disk: the OE kernel is now unable to mount /dev/sda1!!! I was definitly *not* mounting the correct partition. I then tried to use /dev/sdbx instead, but the kernel is unable to mount the partition!

So, as you suggested, there is maybe something missing in the kernel, and it does not see the CF at all (like when I use the installer). I don't think it uses any other name? Like /dev/hdxxx?

I will post the dmesg/lsmod output...

Could it be the 'pata' module which is missing?

I'm compiling from source (git). Can you tell me how I add this module (if it is the correct one) to the kernel, before I compile?

thanks.
Frédéric
