New Kodi was released not long ago including a security fix that is somewhat serious. When can we expect to see an OpenElec update including this new version?

I tried to find some details about the subtitle security attack. Does it affect WeTec Core/Play running older versions of OpenELEC?

That's something I'd like to know as well, especially since that problem there is an even worse one with the current SAMBA implementation (CVE-2017-7494) just announced and patched (today) by the SAMBA dev team.

openelec is most likely (and I am 99% sure it is not) not vulnerable at all ;)

According to this: security.berkeley.edu/news/samba-350-remote-code-execution-cve-2017-7494 Samba 4.6.3 is vulnerable, (in fact anything up to 4.6.4).

oh. my bad. openelec updated to 4.x. so yes it is vulnerable. but the bug is not really that critical (why would you expose your OE's samba ports to the internet?)

The subtitle bug is critical though, you risk infection when using a downloader addon I believe.
OpenELEC is dead, check out LibreELEC.

I'm not sure if I'm vulnerable... is there a difference between streaming and downloading?

Obviously I wouldn't, but I'm willing to bet there are plenty of people using Openelec/Kodi who don't even know what a port on a router is, let alone know how to secure one properly.
In any case it's always a good idea to use the properly patched versions of software no?

Until OpenElec does an update, it looks like I'd have to use a different Kodi installer to get the patch? Sorry if this is confusing for me, I'm a newbie to this Linux/Pi/Kodi configuration. Thanks...

Yes man, for security reason you need to be well aware on if openelec update is safe for your device

The Cyber Security Minister further urged businesses to call the Australian Cyber Security Centre or visit its website to learn more information on how to install the latest security patches.
