[Beta] OpenELEC 4.0 Beta 2 released

15 Mar 2014

The OpenELEC team is proud to announce its second Beta of OpenELEC 4.0.
Internally this will be known by the less-catchy name OpenELEC 3.95.2.

This release includes some bugfixes and improvements since 3.95.1 (beta1). Besides the usual bugfixes and package updates as well the XBMC Gotham beta2 release we also added some fixes to fix Airplay issues with iOS 7 devices, fixed SSL support for XBMC's internal ffmpeg, more firmwares for bluetooth, wlan and DVB devices, fixes for standby/wakeup issues on some systems and a fixed LIRC support for RPI's GPIO remote receivers.

The team has made a huge effort to make this one of our best releases yet. Since the OpenELEC 3.0 and 3.2.x releases, we have worked hard to improve OpenELEC in a number of areas. Some of these are visible changes, others are backend changes that aren’t as visible to every user but are certainly worth mentioning.

The OpenELEC 3.95 release series are test releases (beta) for OpenELEC-4.0.
OpenELEC-4.0 will be the next stable release, which is a feature release and the successor of OpenELEC-3.2.

You should only upgrade from OpenELEC-3.2 to OpenELEC 3.95.2 for testing purposes. If you are going to update to one of our beta releases, we STRONGLY advise that you make a backup of your XBMC data.

Since OpenELEC 3.2 the underlying OS and the build system have been completely reworked. One aspect of the builds that isn’t visible to most users is the buildsystem; it is one of the most fundamental building blocks for OpenELEC. It provides us the flexibility to support many different build platforms, to be responsive in updating specific packages and to add new features easily.

Updated and changed Components since OpenELEC-3.95.1 (summary)

  • update to xbmc-13-a1cab7a (Gotham Beta2)
  • update to xf86-video-nvidia-legacy-304.121

  • xbmc: 5 seconds to exit. no more
  • xbmc: init takes care of reboot and shutdown
  • start lircd via systemd, rework lircd_helper and udev rules, this should fix #2991, this should fix #2968

Testing and Reporting

There has been many months of development and testing in the run-up to this beta release, but like any major update there are a lot of changes. Unfortunately, we are unable to test every scenario on all hardware, so it’s possible you might pick up on an issue we may have missed (this is why we do beta tests). We would like anyone brave enough to test this release and report issues that they find either with OpenELEC or XBMC.

Please report any issues you encounter to our issue tracker on github and/or forum. Please follow our guidelines for submitting issues outlined here: https://github.com/OpenELEC/OpenELEC.tv/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md

Supported Platform Changes

The number of builds supported has simplified. As of OpenELEC 4.0, images will be provided for AppleTV, Generic (i386 and x86_64) and Raspberry Pi’s.
We have also recently added support for Solid-Run Cubox-I devices to OpenELEC. However, this support is still under active development. Given the fact that this code base is not yet stable, we will not be providing an image for Cubox-i devices with OpenELEC-4.0. Hopefully this will change in the future as support for the platform matures.

New and dropped builds in OpenELEC 4.0

We will no longer be supplying specific builds for Arctic MC, Fusion, Intel and Ion devices – support for all of these devices has been rolled into the Generic builds. If you are using one of these builds, you will need to migrate to the Generic builds. If you need to migrate from an older unsupported build, please follow these instructions:

from Version Old System/Build Architecture to Version
OpenELEC =< 3.0 ION i386 (with 32-bit capable hardware) Generic i386
OpenELEC=< 3.2 ION x86_64 (with 64-bit capable hardware) Generic x86_64
OpenELEC=< 3.0 Intel i386 (with 32-bit capable hardware) Generic i386
OpenELEC=< 3.2 Intel x86_64 (with 64-bit capable hardware) Generic x86_64
OpenELEC=< 3.2 Generic_OSS i386 (with 32-bit capable hardware) Generic i386
OpenELEC=< 3.2 Generic_OSS x86_64 (with 64-bit capable hardware) Generic x86_64
OpenELEC=< 3.0 Xtreamer Ultra 1/2 x86_64 Generic x86_64
OpenELEC=< 3.2  AMD Fusion x86_64 Generic x86_64
OpenELEC=< 3.2 Arctic_MC x86_64 Generic x86_64

How To Upgrade To OpenELEC 4.0 Beta2 Release

If you are going to update to one of our beta releases, we STRONGLY advise that you make a backup of your XBMC data. If you are using OpenELEC 3.2, you can use our OpenELEC Settings addon to backup your data and then reset it. If you are on an older build, you will need to do this manually:

mv /storage/.xbmc /storage/.xbmc-backup

You must manually update to this beta release. For more details, please visit http://wiki.openelec.tv/index.php?title=Updating_OpenELEC.

Thank You!

We would like to thank our users, team members and partners for testing, reporting and fixing issues, creating how-to documents, developing new features, and their donations of hardware and funds to the project. We appreciate your continued support, without it we would not be able to continue.

Hi!
i tried Beta 3 today, but i still have those livetv playback issues especially (but not only) with HD channels.
Don't have any issues with playback of livetv with the latest stable release.
Here's the logs, debug starts at line 334.
xbmclogs.com/show.php?id=162027
I really think that
12:31:41 T:2735731792 ERROR: ffmpeg[A30FF450]: [ac3] frame CRC mismatch
may be the problem.

Thank you very much

Hallo,

I have tested OpenELEC-RPi.arm-devel-20140325211855-r18010-g0ffd4cb. For me Airplay with iOS7.1 does not work.
Can somebody confirm this issue?

strange - the booted kernel has another version than the modules - may this be the problem ?

raspberrytest:~ # uname -a
Linux raspberrytest 3.13.5 #1 PREEMPT Wed Mar 5 19:35:59 CET 2014 armv6l GNU/Linux
raspberrytest:~ # find / | grep lirc_rpi
/lib/modules/3.13.7/kernel/drivers/staging/media/lirc/lirc_rpi.ko

Solution: i used an outdated kernel on the SDCARD i am booting from. After updating the kernel all modules were loaded.

I had mine freeze up, and I noticed the USB IR receiver blinking so I unplugged it and the video started playing again. The remote was on the shelf and nothing was pushing buttons if you are thinking that might a cause. Tried it again the next time, but did not work.

Ok, just paused again at 22:15:00
No changes at all to logs.
Again, audio stopped then video.
SH'd in. Entered wrong password until SSH server responded with error.
Video then started again.

Will try nightly OpenELEC-RPi.arm-devel-20140325211855-r18010-g0ffd4cb.tar

Finally it failed again for me.

The sound stopped first, then a few seconds later, video paused.
I logged in via SSH and as soon as I entered the password, XBMC showed "CEC: Disconnected".
The video then jumped around a bit and then continued playing.
CEC is not working now.

Logs:
journalctl: sprunge.us/ccfS
xbmc.log: pastebin.com/LF24V2U0

Pause happened around 21:47:00
Seems there is nothing in ether logs related to the pause :( ?

I seem to be having the same problem with my Pi, about 30 minuets in, boom.

I also have the same problem. My work around is strange: I disconnect the LAN(yes not my HDMI) cable then i get the message 'pulse eight cec adapter stopped' i plugin the lan cable and my video start playing again. Of course my tv-remote doesnt work anymore i have to use my XBMC remote to control.

I made an account to post this.

I have the same or a similar issue, I just ssh in. Once logged it it starts playing again. Sometimes i have to run "top" or log in a few times but no more than 3. Give that a try if its easier.

Strange.
My setup is:
OpenElec on RPI. Shared MYSQL database on my PC and also the movies hard-drive is on my PC (sharing via SMB).
So, the Pi is accessing the MYSQL database and movies via the network to my PC.
Never had this problem on the stable releases.

Are we mind readers?

Logs please
<code>journalctl -b | paste</code>
<code>cat /storage/.xbmc/temp/xbmc.log | paste</code>

Thanks for letting me know the commands :)
Waiting for fault now and will paste logs when it does.

+Karma for you ;)

I have the same or a similar issue, I just ssh in. Once logged it it starts playing again. Sometimes i have to run "top" or log in a few times but no more than 3. Give that a try if its easier.

Strange.
My setup is:
OpenElec on RPI. Shared MYSQL database on my PC and also the movies hard-drive is on my PC (sharing via SMB).
So, the Pi is accessing the MYSQL database and movies via the network to my PC.
Never had this problem on the stable releases.

Are we mind readers?

Logs please
journalctl -b | paste
cat /storage/.xbmc/temp/xbmc.log | paste

Since Beta 2 my RPi freezes consistently after 20 - 30 minutes of playback. If I would know where to find a log for this I would report details.
I seem to be having the same problem with my Pi, about 30 minuets in, boom.

Since I upgraded I'm having this strange issue with sound. I have an Asus E35M1-I DELUXE FUSION HTPC on an LG 47LM960V tv connected with HDMI and since the update every time I watch a movie after some time it gets out of sync and at some point it loses sound completely. If I stop the movie and restart it it does the same. I completely re-installed openelec just in case but problem still there.

Is anyone else experiencing the same problem? It was working fine with latest stable version.

No one has this?

Same here. It seems to be random intervals.
I check the log, and nothing at all about it.

On both of my Intel 847 builds the suspend feature is not working anymore .
Sometimes it does suspend but it will not turn on from the remote but it will from the power button.
Other times it will suspend but the power LED on the box stays on and the only way to get the box out of this state is to reset it.
I did update from previous OpenELEC version manually. Remote used on both boxes is the Keyspan RF remote (Tripp Lite Keyspan ER-V2 RF Remote Control).
The same setup worked perfectly with OpenELEC 3.2.

Other things I noticed is the back button on the remote is now assigned to a different function while playing a video, it used to skip back 10s.
