OpenELEC and Blu-Ray support: the truth

The development version of OpenELEC now includes work from the libaacs project on videolan.org

For those that do not know the libaacs projects goals are:

“libaacs is a research project to implement the Advanced Access Content System specification.

This research project provides, through an open-source library, a way to understand how the
AACS works.

...

NB: this project doesn't offer any key or certificate that could be used to decode encrypted
copyrighted material.

Features

Portability:
Currently supported platforms are GNU/Linux, Windows, MacOS X.
The main dependency is libgcrypt for all cryptographic functions.

Freedom:
libaacs is released under a Free Software license, ensuring it will stay free.

Legal:
libaacs does not include any key or certificate and respects copyright.

Fun:
libaacs is a fun to hack on project, in its starting phase.”

In essence it is an intellectual exercise around the encryption of commercial Blu-Ray discs (which you paid a lot for) that blocks playback on open source projects such as XBMC and OpenELEC.

We have included libaacs (for now in the newest development builds) to give developers, testers and fans a firmware based test-bed to experiment on so that they can find a way to play encrypted Blu-Ray on our system.

What is libaacs?

It is a way of playing your encrypted Blu-Ray discs just like you do with DVD's in OpenELEC. Put a Blu-Ray in your HTPC and select it to play. That's it. It can be best compared with MakeMKV, but in addition to MakeMKV that will back up your blu-ray disc (and take a long time for it) or streams a Blu-ray (which takes a lot of actions to make it work), playback via libaacs will function as a part of OpenELEC with no additional actions needed, just Blu-Ray player like.

What is the status now?
It is still not possible yet to make full use of it, as it is an project in early development. Eventually we’ll be able to play Blu-Ray discs as shown in the video below:

We do not supply any keys on our website, forum or our builds. Please do not ask for them as we will not give any support on this.
